Dean Windass insists that he is not a tax dodger despite facing a £164,000 bill at a Preliminary Bankruptcy heading.

Windass, father of Sevco ace Josh, has vowed to fight the tax bill which relates to an investment he made while playing for Middlesbrough in 2001.

HMRC are pursuing a number of similar schemes which were designed to reduce tax bills by avoiding in certain industries such as film and media.

Speaking to the Hull Daily Mail Windass claimed: “I am not a tax avoider and I will fight this to the very end. I have paid 40 per cent tax all my life and I haven’t benefited at all from this scheme.

“I have never owed anyone a penny and that includes the tax man. Why should I pay them £164,000 for a scheme that I have never benefited from?

“I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong but I do regret ever getting involved in the scheme. My financial adviser told me I would get a tax rebate in 2017 so I thought it was a good idea, but that doesn’t make me a tax avoider because I have never benefited a penny.

“I’m still earning an honest living and I’m trying to lead a decent life. I’m the ambassador for Hull City and I’m planning on getting married again next year so I just want this dark cloud over my life to pass so I can get on with it.”

Windass had a spell in Scotland with Aberdeen but is best remembered for his scoring exploits at Middlesbrough and Hull.

In 2008 at the age of 39 he scored the winning goal in the play-off final against Bristol City that earned Hull a place in the Premier League for the first time.
