It might seem far fetched to some but why shouldn’t Steven Gerrard be re-united with Brendan Rodgers and Kolo Tourne.

News that the former Liverpool skipper could be in the market for another playing contract has sparked speculation of a dramatic return to the Premier League.

Anfield would seem to be the obvious destination but if there is no room in Jurgen Klopp’s squad other options are limited sending Celtic to the front of the queue.

When he made an emotional farewell to the Liverpool support in 2015 Gerrard made a pledge that he would never play against the club that he grew from boy to man at.

In a statement he revealed: “’I’m going to carry on playing and although I can’t confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won’t be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool – that is something I could never contemplate.

‘My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over.

‘I can’t thank Brendan [Rodgers], the owners and everyone at the club enough for how they’ve handled this and I am leaving on great terms. Also, I would like to thank my team-mates and all the staff for their help and continued support.”

With Rodgers and Toure thriving at Celtic a short term deal in Glasgow’s east end is bound to be in the midfielder’s thoughts- more so than backtracking on his statement about playing against Liverpool.

At the weekend Gerrard admitted: “I’m wondering whether I should play on for a little bit longer or whether I should call it a day. I haven’t 100 per cent decided on that yet.

I still enjoy playing. I still love coming into training, I still love competing, so if I can carry on and there are opportunities to stay here or go somewhere else for another six months or 12 months then I’ll consider it.

But if nothing comes up I’ll try and fly through the coaching badges and see what happens down that road.”

Whether it’s playing at Celtic or the first steps into coaching Gerrard is bound to be linked to Celtic- and an unlikely reunion with Rodgers and Toure.
