The Honduran media are in shock about the demise of Emilio Izaguirre.
At 30-years-old and with two World Cup Finals appearances behind him the full-back should be at the peak of his powers but can barely win a place on the Celtic bench.
The arrival and continued development of Kieran Tierney has condemned Izzy to the sidelines with interest in the teenager from Bayern Munich appearing to be the only crumb of comfort for the Honduran media who are puzzled by the decline of an international favourite.
Explaining his decline La Prensa published: “All is not going well at Glasgow Celtic for Emilio Izaguirre. The Honduran defender is experiencing one of the worst early season in his career with the ‘Hoops’ and incredibly has not yet debuted officially in this campaign as in the Scottish Premier League or in the group phase of the UEFA Champions League.
“The 30-year-old defender didn’t make the 18 man squad chosen by Brendan Rodgers for the Group C Champions League match against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
“It is not the first time that Izaguirre has not appeared on the bench and is the third in a row, it happened against Kilmarnock and Alloa Athletic.”
During the summer Izaguirre was linked with moves to Spain, North America and a return to Honduran side Montagua.
In his first season at Celtic Izaguirre picked up all the main Player of the Year awards but his development was badly effected by an ankle break in August 2011.
Despite recovering his place in the team as Celtic won the 2011/12 SPL title it seemed that the confidence that he had shown in his first season wasn’t quite present.
In May 2014, at the same time as Mikael Lustig, Izaguirre signed a new three year contract with Celtic.
