Brendan Rodgers will switch into pragmatic mode for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach.
The last time the Irishman took his side into Europe they suffered a seven goal hammering from Barcelona as the Catalan side turned on the style.
Gladbach can’t call on the same big names as Luis Enrique but demonstrated at Celtic Park how dangerous they can be.
Celtic bounced back from their caning in the Nou Camp to produce a six goal thriller against Manchester City that restored their credibility on the continent.
On Tuesday night Rodgers is unlikely to venture away from his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation but within that system there is scope to alter away from the standard attacking format.
“I tried to alter things a bit when we went to Barcelona, it just didn’t work!” he admitted as he looked forward to Tuesday’s match.
“I tried to be whatever you want to say- pragmatic, a bit more defensive. We couldn’t have put any more at the back.
“Listen, I can adapt. I’m not daft enough to think there’s only one way to play the game.
“We always look to play football but there can be moments when counter-attack football is very effective.
“Most people would have said Manchester City was a game to sit and not give them space to play but our intent to impose our style on them has started off a trend for other teams to follow.”
On Friday night Gladbach were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Eintract Frankfurt, a result that saw them slip to 12th place in the Bundesliga.
Andre Schubert’s side have now gone five league matches without a win but after beating Celtic they are hopeful of taking full points from the Champions League matches against Celtic and Manchester City.
