Brendan Rodgers has given his backing to Scott Brown’s decision to end his international exile.

At the start of the season the Celtic skipper announced his decision to step down from the international scene missing out on the three opening World Cup qualifiers.

After an approach from Gordon Strachan Brown has decided to make himself available for next month’s World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley.

It’s unclear whether Brown’s return is on a one off basis or on a permanent basis with further detail expected on Wednesday when Strachan names his Wembley squad.

I gave him my thoughts of what the benefits and issues might be, but I back him 100 per cent,” Rodgers said about Brown’s u-turn.

“I will always support the players even though my interest is only Celtic but it is a short career and Scott has always stood up for his country and he knows his country needs him.

“He wants to go and help Gordon, someone he has huge respect for, and it is a decision I support 100 per cent. He probably recognises that someone he respects hugely is in a difficult position because of injuries to some key players.

“He decided he wanted to give it a go for this game and then see what happens after that. He wanted to retire and concentrate on his career with Celtic.”

Scotland are sitting in fourth place in Group F with four points from three matches, a win away to Malta, a home draw and defeat away to Slovakia.

England are in top place with seven points despite the switch in manager from Sam Allerdyce to Gareth Southgate.

Only the group winners will automatically qualify for the World Cup Finals in Russia, eight of the nine runners-up will go forward to play offs.

There were calls for Gordon Strachan to go after Scotland’s 3-0 loss in Slovakia with the outcome of the Wembley match likely to have a big bearing on his future as international manager.
