Blair Alston never featured on Mark Warburton’s summer shopping list but the current Ibro boss now knows all about the St Johnstone midfielder.

Tommy Wright snapped the midfielder up on a pre-contract agreement from Falkirk round about the same time as Warbo was donating £350,000 to the Perth club for Michael O’Halloran.

Alston’s fifth minute strike silenced an already quiet Ibrox as the season ticket holders began to digest the 2016 reality of where their club stands.

Expectations fuelled by a summer of title promises are already in tatters as the supporters listen out for results Hearts and Aberdeen. Warbo might like to claim that the gulf with Celtic has closed but the fans know better, especially those that have paid to watch the home draws with Hamilton, Ross County and St Johnstone.

Fine margins may be the next excuse used by the former city trader but if there is anything other than a win on Saturday at home to Kilmarnock it’ll be difficult to find a way out for Warbo.

The Magic Hat theory was trashed by Hibs at Hampden in May, it now seems that Warbo is one more setback away from taking his revolutionary ideas down the M74.
