Trevor Steven is the latest former Rangers (IL) hero to speak out about his fears over ten-in-a-row.

The midfielder enjoyed the good days at Ibrox through the eighties and nineties as the Bank of Scotland funded the fantasies of David Murray.

These days Metro Bank won’t give the tribute act an overdraft facility while the moonbeams of Dave King only seem to stretch to dredging up cast-off’s from Accrington Stanley or splashing £1.8m on three goal Joe Garner.

In 1988 Murray was able to buy Steven and Gary Stevens from Everton, 28 years later Mark Warburton was unable to agree a double deal with Accrington for Josh Windass and Josh Crooks meaning that he had to wait till the summer to snatch them at the end of their contracts.

Illustrating how out of touch he is Steven has suggested selling the family silver- clearly unaware that Sports Direct control the merchandising and retail operations while Craig Whyte has a claim in over the ownership of Ibrox Stadium and the state-of-the-art training facility at Murray Park.

Voicing his feats in The Sun Steven said: “Rangers are going to have to sell the family silver to catch Celtic.

It’s perhaps premature to think about, because Celtic have to win another four in a row, but in the back of their minds the fans are already thinking about it.

Once Celtic get to six, all of a sudden there’s real pressure on Rangers and they’ve got to stop them within two years, because if they get to seven it is going to be bedlam.

The problem Rangers have though is attracting the right people. Rangers’ buying power is a third of Celtic’s and that gap has to narrow, but while that gap is narrowing Celtic are picking up trophies.

It will take Rangers at least three or four years to get into Celtic’s area of the market and in the meantime Rangers have to mix and match and there’s no guarantees with that.”

Steven seems to be a believer in the thoeory that all will be well within a few years without any explanation of how the club from Ibrox generate the money to find better players who would then be sold to Southampton to fund future reinvestment.
