Scott McDonald is certain to face an SFA hearing after questioning the competence of referee John Beaton and assistant Ross Haswell.

The Lanarkshire official was at the centre of controversy on Saturday when Dundee keeper Dave Mitchell caught a cross then dropped the ball over the line before retrieving it.

It wasn’t quite of the same incompetence shown by Steven McLean when he allowed Josh Meekings to punch clear a net bound header from Leigh Griffiths in the 2015 Scottish Cup semi-final but it was a clear example of a referee being detached from play and having no real feel for the game.

Mark McGhee described the incident as shocking and scandalous to Motherwell’s club TV channel and is likely to get a call from the SFA this week as he prepares for Friday’s England v Scotland match.

According to McDonald Beaton said that he was waiting for the assistant (Haswell) to indicate that it was a goal bringing back memories of Dougie Dougie McDonald trying to pin the blame for his own mistakes onto Steven Craven.

I don’t know if the incident was controversial because it was there for everyone to see – if somebody wanted to make a decision,” the Motherwell striker said. “However, the referee and his assistant didn’t want to make it which isn’t good enough.

If you are a referee or linesman and you are put on the spot then you are in that job for a reason – to make a decision, not to back out.

Even their players were saying it was in, and yet when I had a look up at the linesman the look on his face was as if somebody had just been killed.

He wasn’t in line with play as he was following the offside line, and I understand that, but he had to see it from where he was. Every player on the pitch thought it was a goal.

He didn’t want to make a decision, which was embarrassing. The referee told us at half-time from his position he thought it was in but his linesman didn’t give him a decision.

Well, if he doesn’t make a decision then the referee must. If he thinks it is in then he should give a goal. It is comical. Don’t even talk about goal-line technology. What’s the point? We can’t afford it. We should have it but we can’t.”
