Davie Provan believes that all of Brendan Rodgers’ attention is centred on the Champions League.
With a 19 point lead over Sevco and 21 point advantage over Aberdeen with the same amount of games played this season’s title is as good as delivered.
As he prepares for the second part of the season Rodgers is adamant that Celtic will be stronger with his transfer thoughts geared towards players that can get the club into the group phase of the Champions League and make an impact.
It would be a brave, or foolish, punter that backs against Celtic extending six in a row into nine or ten but from his base in England Provan believes that Rodgers has ambitions above domestic domination.
“If Rodgers is allowed to improve his team between now and May, he’ll be in good nick for another shot at Uefa’s cash-cow competition,” Provan stated in The Sun.
“The pursuit of Krasnodar midfielder Kouassi Eboue is encouraging but his signing would be pointless if Moussa Dembele was going out the door at the same time.
“The buy low, sell high policy has to be put on hold. In the next few years, there should be enough Champions League cash to keep players happy.
“Nobody is looking for the car crash economics that brought Sir David Murray’s rule to an end. But the proper football clubs spend every cent they can afford.
With the right backing, Rodgers can restore Celtic’s credibility in Europe. Both Gordon Strachan and Lennon set the benchmark, taking the Hoops into the Champions League last 16.
“Rodgers would make his own bit of history were he to match them.
“Last 16 of Europe’s premier competition? That was a given for Celtic’s nine-in-a-row team.”
While he is looking to bring in at least one more player to join Eboue this month Rodgers has stated that ideally he’d like a first team squad of 16 or 17 bolstered by emerging younger players.
