Sevco and the luck of the draw

Details of Sevco’s incredible good fortune in cup draws has finally surfaced as Mark Warburton looks forward to a fifth round visit from Morton in the Scottish Cup.

For ten consecutive draws running the Ibrox side have came up with a home tie, try spinning a £1 coin ten times and see how often it lands on heads.

Compounding the good fortune that the Ibrox side are enjoying is the draws that their competitors for second place tend to end up with.

Last season Aberdeen’s interest in the Scottish Cup ended away to Hearts at Tynecastle, yesterday they were paired away to Ross County in the fifth round draw. In three ties they’ve twice been drawn away to top six SPFL clubs.

Hearts have had similar bad fortune in the cup draws, out of their last seven draws five have been at home (assuming that they see off Raith Rovers in Wednesday’s replay). Of those five ties three have been against Hibs- it seems that an Edinburgh derby in the early rounds of the Scottish Cup is much more likely than a Glasgow version.

Not only does Warbo’s side enjoy a regular stream of home cup ties but they also manage to avoid top six opponents visiting Ibrox.

While Hearts and Hibs play in the Scottish Cup on an almost annual basis Sevo have managed to avoid being drawn against Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs before the semi-final stage in each of their five seasons with their toughest draw being away to Dundee United in the fourth round in 2012/13- which they lost 3-0.

Comparing Sevco’s cup draws with what Celtic have been paired with certainly highlights the contrast in fortunes for both teams- once Hearts and Aberdeen are brought into the comparison the results should be enough to get Warbo to take half an hour off from moaning.
