Time running out on McKay contract

Sevco have still to open contract talks with wonderboy Barrie McKay.

After being dropped by Mark Warburton the 22-year-old earned the dubious title of being the home side’s man-of-the-match in the 2-1 defeat from Celtic.

That has prompted speculation that he could be the transfer target of bigger clubs with some outrageous suggestions claiming that he could bring in £1m.

That figure won’t make much of a dent in the Ibrox debt mountain with the rest of Warbo’s squad unlikely to attract more than £5m if they were put up for sale tomorrow.

Discussing the remaining months of his contract McKay told The Sun: “There’s been nothing said yet. For me, right now is just about playing football.

If they come to me then they come to me. Until they do, it’s up to me to keep doing well. I don’t think there’s anything to be gained from thinking about it too much.

If you do, you can start to let it affect your performances and stop playing well. I’m quite a chilled guy and that probably helps me. I see my long-term future here.

I’ve still got 18 months left and if they want to look at extending it they can come and talk to me but until then it’s up to me to keep performing to the level I can and to keep progressing.”

McKay will be the main threat to the Motherwell defence on Saturday as Sevco try to keep their season alive with a run in the Scottish Cup.

A 19 point gap to Celtic has sapped the energy and enthusiasm from the fans who bought into the #goingfor55 slogan through the summer, an early failure in the Scottish Cup would put the future of Warbo in serious doubt.
