Peter Odemwingie has urged Henry Onyekuru to jump at a summer move to Celtic.

The Eupen striker was the subject of a £1m bid from Celtic during the January transfer window but his club were keener on a move to CSKA Moscow.

Odemwingie has been involved in a few transfer sagas of his own and famously drove to QPR on deadline day in January 2013 to try and force through a transfer.

The former West Brom and Stoke man understands the dilemma that Onyekuru finds himself in but believes that waiting on a move to Celtic is the smartest move that the young striker can make.

Henry phoned me in January and explained the situation,” Odemwingie told the Daily Record.

He said he had a few offers here and there and wasn’t too happy at his Belgian club and wanted to leave.

He asked me specifically about Celtic and I told him first and foremost they are a big club, they give youngsters a chance and it’s a step closer to the English Premier League.

Even for someone like me looking in from the outside I was able to list so many positives about moving to Celtic and he seemed to agree – but he had other options. Once we had our conversation it was out of my hands.

I told him to do what was right for him and what he felt would make him happiest but certainly I made a strong case for Celtic.

I know the Scottish Premiership isn’t the biggest league but Celtic are a massive club. They play in Europe every year and a lot of times in the Champions League.”

Onyekuru returned to the Eupen side on Sunday but their form slump continued with a 2-0 home defeat from Beveren.

Since news of Celtic’s interest emerged and the stand off between player and club Eupen have gone four matches without a win.

Last season Onyekuru scored was Eupen’s leading scorer, with the club now second from bottom of the table both parties are in need of a return to form with the striker having scored ten times this term.
