Referees rush to say sorry!

After Craig Thomson phoned up Tommy Wright to apologise Andrew Dallas has did the same with Ian Cathro.

Can Ronny Deila expect a phone call from Steven McLean or do apologises only break out after Celtic get the benefit of an honest mistake?

Thomson apologised to Wright after giving a penalty to Celtic.

Dallas did likewise after being ridiculed for the booking of Malaury Martin in the Motherwell v Hearts match.

“I’ve actually taken a phone-call from Andrew Dallas, the match referee, who is accepting of the error he made,” the Scotsman reported Cathro explaining to Sky Sports. “We’re thankful for the position he’s taken on that, just disappointed that Malaury still has to suffer having that yellow card against him.

“Ultimately, we were hoping that sense would be able to prevail. We’ve learned that nothing can be done.

I think there’s something there for everybody moving forward. Hopefully there will be some discretionary way of being able to step up and deal with that.”

In 2015 Celtic and Deila were the biggest victims ever of honest mistakes when McLean and assistant Alan Muir both failed to see Josh Meekings punch clear a net bound header from Leigh Griffiths.

After that match Celtic wrote to the SFA for an explanation but no reply was ever published.

It’s unclear if the new trend of referees phoning to apologise for mistakes is to become SFA policy.

Rather than second hand reporting of phone calls most fans would rather see a 200 word referees report appear on the SFA or SPFL website within two hours of the final whistle.
