Warburton faces the truth and grim reality

Mark Warburton has admitted that last season’s Scottish Cup victory over Celtic was down to Ronny Deila and not his own tactical wizardry.

The penalty shoot out win in April was greeted with joy and delight as a signal that football works in signals and the myth of ‘Rangers are back’ and ‘Rangers are coming’ was launched.

Ibrox ambassador John Brown claimed that the panic appointment of Brendan Rodgers was solely down to the challenge coming from Ibrox!

Even a Scottish Cup Final defeat from Hibs was overlooked as Warbo brought in eleven new players, each of them better than those that had beaten Celtic at Hampden.

Yesterday, the day after being hammered 4-1 by Hearts at Tynecastle Warbo had to confront and explain how a 25 point gap could appear over ten months.

Tellingly he admitted to The Sun: “You’re reading too much into the Celtic game maybe.

I have to be very careful because I’m very respectful of other managers, but I would imagine that (Celtic) squad of players is in a different place to where they were when they played us that day.

Please don’t say I am criticising anyone because I’m not but I would say that squad of players is full of international players. Should we have won that day or had that result? I don’t know.”

Warbo’s message is in complete contrast to the triumphalism of the spring and summer.

Having made #goingfor55 a source of amusement for fans of every other team in Scotland the former city trader will be far from Ibrox when the task of stopping 7-in-a-row is launched in the summer.
