Talks between Celtic and Stuart Armstrong’s agent are going well over a new contract.

The midfielder is under contract until June 2018 with the net couple of months crucial to agree new terms.

Armstrong has been outstanding over the last five months after forcing his way into Brendan Rodgers side.

In central midfield or playing off the striker the former Dundee United man has excelled with 12 goals adding to his value to the team.

Rodgers tends to get his way when it comes to agreeing new contracts with the midfielder clearly a big part of the Irishman’s plans.

The club and my representatives are in negotiations and things seem to be going well,” the midfielder told the Evening Times about contract talks after his Scotland debut.

It has been a very good season and Brendan Rodgers has been great for me. He has come in and allowed me to play central midfield which has really developed my game so I’m in a good place at the moment and I just want to enjoy it.

It was a long-held ambition of mine to play international football so it was a rewarding experience to do that on Sunday at Hampden. As I say, it is nice to be where I am at the minute but I know that the main thing for me is to focus on the football.”

Early on in the season Rodgers got James Forrest and Tom Rogic secured onto new contracts, more recently Mikael Lustig and Craig Gordon had their contracts extended.

Getting another couple of seasons onto Armstrong’s contract would be a great bit of business and allow the Irishman to plan summer additions to his squad safe in the knowledge that his most improved midfielder will be with the club for the long haul.
