Celtic team to beat Dundee

|

With their record of 33 wins and two draws from their domestic fixtures there is little that the Celtic squad has to prove.

The last six days however have seen a few questions raised about the champions elect in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw with Sevco.

None of Brendan Rodgers squad performed as poorly as Bobby Madden but unlike the match referee the Celtic players are answerable.

The Irishman is certain to make some changes to his side with Callum McGregor looking a certain starter after being presented for media duties on Thursday.

Next week’s international break will provide some respite before the run in to the season with almost all eyes on the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Getting everyone close to top form for April 23 will be the priority, with a couple of changes to the team at Dundee the message will go out across the squad that only those at their very best will be given a jersey at Hampden.

There will be no title party at Dens Park tomorrow but every match matters with the chance to make history beckoning for players that can go into the company of some of the greatest men to play for the club.

CRAIG GORDON

Came out of last week’s match with his reputation enhanced.

Two one-on-one saves from Martyn Waghorn demonstrated the confidence that the keeper is playing with, more than justifying his new contract.

He pulled off an outstanding save that led to Clint Hill’s equaliser, if his team-mates had been as sharp that goal would have been prevented.

MIKAEL LUSTIG

Was part of a defence that collectively failed last week, regularly getting caught in possession and rarely pushing forward.

He’s better than that and knows that his direct competitor was signed by the manager earlier this season.

Since the turn of the year he has shown some great attacking touches, producing that form and defending solidly is required on a match by match basis.

JOZO SIMUNOVIC

Looks likely to be back in the side after last Sunday’s below par defending.

Eighteen months into his Celtic career he has still to nail down a regular place with the remaining matches this season the opportunity to do just that.

His injury worries should be over with, there are no more artificial pitches to be visited, its time to see the best of Jozo.

ERIK SVIATCHENKO

Has a few question marks against him now after two shaky performances against Sevco. That’s strange since he was one of the very few that achieved pass marks in last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final defeat

Central defence is all about pairings, Simunovic and Sviatchenko looked to have some promise in the first half of the season. They need to rediscover that or find out who plays best alongside Dedryck Boyata.

KIERAN TIERNEY

We can be fairly sure that KT will know what is at stake over the coming weeks.

He’ll know how the fans are feeling this week and the perfect come-back to last week’s disappointment.

Dens Park will suit his style of play, he’ll be back at his best with the right side of the Dundee side up against it with Tierney and Scott Sinclair on form.

SCOTT BROWN

The skipper had little support last week but gave his usual high standard performance.

Callum McGregor offered good support in the second half in a partnership that has almost always delivered.

He knows what’s at stake and the glory that is within touching distance, he’ll carry Rodgers instructions onto the park backed up by his own message.

CALLUM MCGREGOR

He looked the part when he came on for Nir Bitton, as he did in the December win at Ibrox.

He’s not featured very much since the turn of the year and will be itching to get back involved in the first XI.

He knows that Tom Rogic’s return will step up the competition but he has bounced back plenty of times to make 99 first team appearances.

PATRICK ROBERTS

Has been hot and cold over the last few months, the fact that he is unlikely to be around for Champions League qualifiers has gone against him.

Dens Park tends to suit his type of player, he can make a statement and be a big factor over the remaining weeks of the season.

Wherever his future lies he’ll want to put in as many big performances as possible.

STUART ARMSTRONG

One of the few successes from last week, he scored, hit the post and forced two big saves out of Wes Foderingham.

His influence has grown over the last few months, repeating that in the closing weeks of the season will underline his importance to the side.

He won’t lose focus with an international call up, he knows that he has the 100% backing of his manager and will want to repay that faith.

SCOTT SINCLAIR

He’s allowed an off week, like many of his team-mates things barely got started for the former Villa man last week.

There’s no doubting how much he contributes to the side, he’s an out-ball, tracks back and loves to power forward and curl shots in with his right foot.

Alongside Kieran Tierney, Sinclair will provide the main threat to Dundee and will be good value to pop up with a goal.

MOUSSA DEMBELE

With the hands of Danny Wilson and Clint Hill removed we’ll see the real Moussa at Dundee.

So much is expected of a 20-year-old, at the same age Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong were finding their feet at Hibs and Dundee United.

There are plenty more goals to come from the French kid, only a fool would back against him reaching 40 for the season.
