Jack Aitchison was in top form last night as Scotland opened their u-17 European Championship Elite Round with a 6-1 win over Macedonia.

The Celtic striker scored twice in the win before being substituted ahead of Sunday’s match against Serbia.

Scotland reached the Elite Round after topping a four team group that included Portugal with Celtic’s Kerr McInroy scoring the only goal of the game against the Portuguese.

Aitchison opened the scoring in the 10th minute from a Dan Church (another Celt) pass, showing great composure with his first touch then sending in an unstoppable shot. McInroy scored Scotland’s third with another assist from Church.

Macedonia pulled a goal back early in the second half but another spectacular goal from Aitchison set Scotland up for a convincing win.

Celtic also had Stephen Welsh and Robbie Deas in the Scotland team.

The eight group winners and seven best runners up all qualify for the final tournament which will be staged in Croatia during May.

Ireland beat Slovakia 1-0 yesterday to book their place in the finals with two wins from their first matches in Group 8.
