Chris Sutton knows the history- he made plenty during his five years as a Celtic player.
In 2001 he helped Martin O’Neill’s side to the domestic treble- the first since the golden age of Jock Stein back in the late sixties.
Two years later he helped Henrik Larsson to the goals that led to the UEFA Cup Final in Seville.
After that spell at Celtic Sutton is fully connected with the fans and knows the explosive mixture of passion, drive and history that spurs on successive Celtic teams.
“There’s just something about the club’s timing,” he explains in the Daily Record. “They won the Double in their Centenary Year. On their 125th birthday, they managed to sink Barcelona in the Champions League.
“Now in the week where the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions is being celebrated, it seems fate that Celts go on and complete the job.
“Trouble with these landmarks is the players will know all about them and that can add pressure.”
Sutton has watched the current Celtic side develop incredibly under Brendan Rodgers.
After taking the job on from Ronny Deila Sutton wondered if the squad was good enough to reach the group phase of the Europa League- they drew home and away against Manchester City.
Other than a limp 2-0 home defeat from Borussia Monchengladbach Rodgers’ side have lived up to expectations- at Hampden the class of 2017 can join Sutton, Larsson and others in the history books.
