Brendan Rodgers believes that a green and white jersey can bring out the best in Jonny Hayes.

The Irishman joined Celtic last week from Aberdeen and couldn’t contain his excitement at joining the hoops.

After playing against Celtic for almost a decade at Inverness and Aberdeen Hayes knows more than most signings the demands and expectations of his new club.

Anthony Stokes was the last Irishman to be a regular in the Celtic side with Brendan Rodgers expecting big things from the player who ended his Aberdeen career with a goal against the hoops in the final of the Scottish Cup.

I think he’s a player that the supporters will really take to,” the Celtic boss told the club website. “He’ll give his life, he’s a Celtic guy, his family are Celtic and I just think sometimes when you have those about, you maybe get that wee bit extra one or two per cent.”

Hayes will fly out to Austria on Monday to start his Celtic career with three matches arranged around an extensive training programme.

After Austria Hayes is assured of the warmest of welcomes when Celtic head over to Dublin to take on Shamrock Rovers on July 8 although the welcome will be slightly different six days later when Celtic take on Linfield at Windsor Park.
