Derek Johnstone believes that Pedro Caixinha is out performing Mark Warburton in the transfer market.

A year ago the former Ibrox star tipped Warbo to win the title after bringing in stars like Joey Barton and Nico Kranjcar to join Andy Halliday and Martyn Waghorn.

Caixinha has basically ignored the UK market to bring in clients of Pedro Mendes from Portugal and Mexico.

Expecting those players to settle into Scottish football and hit the ground running in three weeks time seems a tall order when the tribute act enters the Europa League qualifiers.

Despite suffering as Celtic rack up six titles on the bounce Johnstone as ever remains confident that things are improving at Ibrox.

Writing in the Evening Times he claims: “The background of the players that are coming into Rangers might not be from the absolute top drawer, but considering where they were shopping this time last year, the signs are encouraging.

Caixinha obviously know the Portuguese and Mexican markets well, and with the greatest of respect, signing players from Benfica’s B team as well as the Portuguese and Mexican top-flights is a world away from Leagues One and Two in England.

The spine of the team is now looking a lot more robust, and there will be more to come, but it is looking good so far.”

It seems that no thought is going in to how the new signings are being funded, with no interest in any of the squad that Caixinha has inherited it can only be a matter of time before the monthly payroll can’t be met.
