After being turned down by St Mirren’s Ross Jack Dundee have appointed Neil McCann as manager.

Even by football standards the quickness of the u-turn took fans by surprise after the former Rangers winger stepped down as manager three days earlier.

McCann took charge of Dundee for the post split fixtures winning his first two matches, drawing the third then signing off with defeats to Inverness Caley Thistle and a 4-0 hammering at Hamilton Accies.

At the Scottish Cup Final last Saturday McCann was part of the Sky Sports team alongside Alex McLeish, Kris Commons and David Tanner but at the start of the season he’s planning to be back in the dug out.

In a statement to the Dundee website last night McCann said: “After completing my spell as interim manager I returned to Sky Sports fully committed to fulfilling my duties and continuing my career in broadcasting.

In the past few days however I have had time to think about the opportunity of being manager of Dundee FC full time and decided it was too good for me to turn down. I’m looking forward to being in charge for the new season and work has already begun on a number of fronts. I’m excited about the future and can’t wait to get started.”

Three days earlier he said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Dundee FC for their hard work in the time I was manager there. It was an honour to become manager of the club where my playing career started and finished and I’m very proud I was able to succeed in keeping them in the Scottish Premiership. I wish them great success in the future.”

After the defeat at Hamilton McCann questioned the attitude of the players, now he has to go back into that group and get them to perform.

Having initially opted for the Sky Sports studio then returned to Dens Park as manager all comments from the former Scotland winger are likely to de contradicted within a couple of days.

During his time at Ibrox McCann received a £500,000 EBT with a side letter according to the BBC.
