Barry Ferguson has warned Pedro Caixinha against stripping Lee Wallace of the Sevco captaincy.

Since he missed the closing games of last season through injury there has been a whispering campaign against Waldo with Bruno Alves championed as the new skipper.

It reached a peak earlier this week when Jim Jefferies was drafted in to explain to his former Hearts full back how it was in his interests to lose the armband!

Alves drew back from grabbing the captaincy when he was wheeled out to promote today’s glamour friendly with Marseilles.

In the Daily Record Ferguson warns: “I also hear Lee Wallace is in danger of losing the captaincy to Alves but in my opinion that would be a mistake.

Lee is a player I rate very highly. He had a poor game against Progres and has taken some stick in the Press and from fans but I don’t see the need for change.

He’s not loud or aggressive in his nature on the pitch but he has real strengths and if the armband is to be handed over then it needs to go to someone who knows the club.

They only other candidate is Kenny Miller. I know about the clamour for Alves to get it but I just can’t agree. I know he has been a fantastic player but a change of captaincy isn’t required.”

Caixinha hasn’t been used to preview today’s friendly against Marseilles suggesting that the fifth best coach in Qatar is viewed as a liability rather than an asset by the Ibrox club.

Today’s team news will be eagerly awaited as Caixinha tries to keep the peace between the best squad in Scotland and his mainly Latin imports with most eyes on whether or not Kenny Miller makes it into the starting XI.

Ferguson was snubbed by Caixinha for the job of becoming his number three with True Blue Jonathan Johansson preferred by Caixinha.
