Manchester City will decide the next move in the Patrick Roberts transfer saga.

Celtic’s interest in the player has been obvious since the end of last season with Roberts indicating that a return to Brendan Rodgers is his preferred option.

City are aware of those factors but are still to be convinced that a move to Celtic is in their best interests.

While Celtic have discussed a permanent deal City are only interested in a loan with football reasons rather than finance the key factor.

Celtic have stated their case to Pep Guardiola’s side with John Kennedy telling The Sun: “You just need to look at how much Patrick has improved in the last 18 months.

We’re going to be in Europe again this season. I think when we sent him back City will have seen he is a much-improved player.

Hopefully they will look at it from that perspective, but it’s their call. Patrick could maybe influence that and they could have a chat about it, but we have to take a back seat and be patient.”

It looks like City could be waiting to find out whether Celtic can offer the winger Europa League or Champions League football.

Beating Astana would certainly strengthen the hoops case but it seems that City are also looking at other options- as are Celtic.

Kennedy revealed that the club is looking to add quality to the squad before the end of the month with other options as well as Roberts to consider.
