Hearts have confirmed the appointment of Jon Daly as caretaker coach starting with Saturday’s visit to Celtic.

Ian Cathro’s sacking yesterday morning has left the club in turmoil after being knocked out of the League Cup after finishing third in their group behind Dunfermline and Peterhead.

Daly, who finished his career in the lower divisions with Sevco has been in charge of the club’s Development League squad and is very clearly a Craig Levein appointment.

As Director of Football Levein was responsible for appointing Cathro and Daly after working with both men while in charge of Dundee United.

At lunchtime today Hearts announced: “Following on from yesterday’s announcement, the Club can confirm that the recruitment process is already underway to identify and appoint a new permanent Head Coach.

During this process, Jon Daly has been asked to take charge of first-team matters on an interim basis, supported by the current coaching team of Assistant Head Coach Austin MacPhee and first-team coach Liam Fox.

This interim setup will take charge of the first-team’s Ladbrokes Premiership match at Celtic on Saturday, and until a new head coach has been appointed.”

No timeline has been announced for the new head coach with the biggest obstacle likely to be working alongside Levein.

Ann Budge brought in the former Scotland manager when she took charge of the club with Robbie Neilson promoted from Development League to first team coach.

Neilson left Hearts in second place when he quit for MK Dons in December 2016 with Cathro managing just five SPFL wins as the Edinburgh club slipped to fifth place in the table.
