Neil Lennon has gone into detail about the level of abuse he received at Ibrox.

While ear cupping and a ‘get-it-up-ye’ gesture created front page news and a fruitless police enquiry the abuse aimed at Lennon has largely been dismissed as ‘fitba banter’ that the Irishman privately enjoys.

Lee McCulloch can visit Celtic Park with minimal attention other than laughter at his attempts in football management but on the other side of the city Lennon gets an entirely different reaction.

A reaction that Scottish politicians and the football authorities would rather ignore than deal with.

By all accounts, there were people complaining about me celebrating the goal,” the Daily Mail reported Lennon saying at yesterday’s media conference.

“And that was reported but there was a lot of other complaints to the police about other things going on in the stadium — and they weren’t reported in the papers.

Look, I have to put up with a lot when I go to this ground. And I don’t complain about it. I could cite a lot of people for what they say or sing — or throw but there is an acceptance that, within the 90 minutes, it’s part of the culture of Glasgow.

So, when I turn round and cup my ears, to suggest that’s a criminal offence — it’s not. Or I punch the air. That’s not.

I think there has been a massive deflection from us winning the game with a team that cost a fraction of the opposition.”

The SFA are expected to come up with a charge for Lennon’s reaction to Simon Murray’s equalising goal at Ibrox.

No action is expected to be taken over the pitch invasion after Alfredo Morelos score in the third minute.

A similar incident at Firhill in May was ignored when dozens of fans celebrated with players after a stoppage time winner from Joey Garner ensured that Sevco would finish their first ever top flight season in third place.
