Brendan Rodgers is hopeful of getting Stuart Armstrong to sign a new Celtic contract.

The midfielder was one of the driving forces in last season’s treble success but is out of contract in 10 months time.

Talks started about a new deal at the turn of the year but haven’t up until now shown much sign of progress.

The arrivals of Olivier Ntcham and Kundai Benyu have added even more competition to the Celtic midfield but Rodgers is hopeful that a new deal can be agreed with Armstrong.

I’m hoping that very soon that can be resolved either way,” the Celtic manager told The Scotsman. “I don’t think we are too far away now. I hope for him and the club it can be resolved.

We haven’t had any offers for Stuart. I know what his goals are, I know where he wants to be and we can help him achieve them here. If that’s the case, he’ll sign. Stability would be good for him.”

Celtic signed Armstrong from Dundee United in February 2015 in a £1.6m deal.

After initially impressing his form dipped in Ronny Deila’s second season with Rodgers starting last season with Armstrong firmly on the sidelines.

By the end of October he had played his way into the side and finished the campaign in the Scotland team after contributing 17 goals to Celtic’s treble triumph.
