Brendan Rodgers is looking to get Dedryck Boyata signed up onto a new Celtic contract.

The former Manchester City defender is just over halfway through a four year deal and is highly rated by his manager.

Boyata looked certain to be surplus to requirements when Rodgers took over from Ronny Deila and made just one appearance in the first half of last season.

Following the winter break in Dubai the Belgian internationalist became a regular in the Celtic side with Rodgers describing him as his first choice central defender.

This week Celtic have signed up Scott Brown, Jozo Simunovic and Callum McGregor on new contracts with that process set to continue.

Dedryck has a year or so to go and there are one or two others,” the Celtic boss told The Herald when asked about further new contracts. “It’s nice that so many players see this as a place they can develop and be successful. It’s nice to have them all on board for the journey.”

Boyata injured his knee in a pre-season friendly against Sparta Prague but is could feature in Saturday’s match against Ross County.

Celtic paid Manchester City £1.5m in the summer of 2015 for Boyata but his first season was a big disappointment as he failed to live up to his billing as a replacement for Jason Denayer.
