Benfica have called off their ‘glamour’ friendly against Sevco in Canada.

With a team full of internationalists the Portuguese side have decided not to send their reserve squad to Hamilton (Ontario) on Friday.

A recent feature on Benfica TV listed Rangers (IL) among the most corrupt clubs in Europe.

Sevco spent a fortnight banging on about the glamour fixture but last night word came through from Portugal than Benfica had lost interest in the match which had sold less than 2,000 tickets.

In a childish statement issued last night Sevco said: “Benfica, who lost 5-0 away to FC Basel in the Champions League last midweek, have pulled out and Rangers are still waiting for an explanation.”

The statement also mentioned taking legal advise on the cancellation but that could prove difficult with Pedro Caixinha’s favourite agent Pedro Mendes heavily involved in setting up the fixture.

With the trip cancelled Caixinha will have to rearrange a week of training at Murray Park which has become something of a battleground in recent weeks.

Despite missing his last two club matches Bruno Alves has been declared fot to join the Portugal squad, where he is Cristiano Ronaldo’s best mate, with Lee Hodson away with the Northern Ireland squad.
