Tom Rogic faces two more hurdles to reach the World Cup Finals after Australia edged past Syria earlier today.

The 1-1 scoreline from the first leg was repeated in Sydney but an extra time goal from Tim Cahill edged the Socceroos into a play-off against the fourth placed nation in the CONCACAF section.

Rogic played for 96 minutes of today’s match before being replaced by Tom Juric with the decisive goal coming four minutes into the second period of extra-time with Syria striking the woodwork in the final minute.

The marathon qualification campaign will now extend to a probable two legged tie against Panama or Honduras which will take place at the same time as the European Play-Off’s.

Celtic have no matches scheduled at that time but trips to Australia and central America for decisive World Cup ties are bound to have an impact on Brendan Rodgers’ team selections.

Rogic played for eight minutes of the first leg match against Syria which was staged in Malaysia.
