Chris Sutton believes that faith in Leigh Griffiths could have saved Gordon Strachan from World Cup heartache.

The Celtic striker scored his fourth goal of the campaign to open the scoring in the 2-2 draw with Slovenia.

Griffiths played in 604 minutes of the 10 match qualifying campaign and produced statistics that any striker would be proud of with 29 attempts on goal, 12 on target with three efforts striking the woodwork as well as four goals.

According to UEFA’s in-house stats the Celtic striker completed 93 out of 116 passes- 86%.

Griffiths changed his twitter name to Shorty after Strachan had claimed that he was too small to play at international level.

Against England at Wembley last November Strachan turned to Griffiths and although the effect wasn’t instant there is no doubt that the introduction of the Celtic striker turned a disastrous campaign into one almost respectable as Scotland finished behind England and Slovakia.
