Over the next 48 hours Stewart Milne is expected to receive an unwanted phone call.

It’ll be from Stewart Robertson or Dave King to discuss compensation for his manager as the campaign to unsettle Derek McInnes is cranked up.

After the best part of 20 years blundering from one manager to another McInnes has brought the relative success to Aberdeen that has kept his critics at bay- he even earned them a trophy and a £1.3m transfer fee for Jonny Hayes.

As a business Aberdeen have been turned around but dark forces are in danger of undoing much of the good work that has made the Dons the second force in the country.

With his club under siege Milne deserves no sympathy.

In last years accounts Aberdeen highlighted how they complied with UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations- not that it will do them any good.

In his haste to have a club from Ibrox back in the top flight Milne and others decided that FFP was something for other countries to bother about.

Now with Sevco spending way beyond their turnover in the sixth year of their existence they are about to make a move for Aberdeen’s most important employee.

In the summer Aberdeen lost their club captain as Sevco decided to pile up more debt with no plan to break even other than an unlikely appearance in the group stage of the Champions League.

Whether McInnes wants to put his reputation on the line with the footballing Titanic is another matter but uncertainty is in the air at Pittodrie.

If his manager turns down a move to Ibrox he’ll be expecting a salary hike on the contract that he signed in the summer after rejecting a move to Sunderland.

McInnes has shown that Aberdeen doesn’t need a ‘strong Rangers’, it’s a shame for Dons fans and shareholders that their chairman has a totally different opinion.
