Regan’s double standards

Stewart Regan has delivered an incredible criticism of Gordon Strachan without a hint of irony about his own failings.

The former Celtic and Middlesbrough manager was sacked yesterday after Scotland failed to reach the World Cup play-off’s with Malky Mackay now in temporary charge.

Speaking at a media conference this afternoon Regan said: “Ultimately we are in a results business and have had a manager in place for five years coming up.

He’d had two campaigns, we’ve had a second unsuccessful campaign and we felt that it was time for a new coach to give us new impetus.”

As he checks out his own record in office Regan may uncover some uncomfortable parallels with the man that he has just sacked.

The former Yorkshire Cricket chief has now overseen four failed qualification campaigns.

With the European Championships expanded to 24 nations Scotland couldn’t even reach the play-off stage. In France last summer Wales reached the last four, Iceland the last eight and Northern Ireland the last 16.

At club level Regan failed to heed the warnings about the financial crisis at Rangers (IL)- within a year of providing a licence for European competition the club was put into liquidation.
