Chris Sutton has followed up a stinging criticism of England in the Daily Record with a brutal assessment of Gareth Southgate’s international squad.

The column in the Record could have looked very foolish if England had beaten Slovenia convincingly but it took a stoppage time goal from Harry Kane to distract attention away from paper aeroplanes.

While Scott Sinclair’s omission from the England squad is understandable on some levels the way that Southgate dismissed any prospect of the Celtic winger featuring in his squad prompted Sutton’s response.

Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford are ahead of Sinclair but after that side options are thin on the ground

While some members of the England squad struggle to get a game at club level Sinclair is playing and scoring in the Champions League.

Sinclair has been capped by England at u-17, u-19, u-19 and has seven u-21 caps but hasn’t been involved in international football since playing for Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games.
