Celtic’s Chelsea factor

Kris Commons believes that the seeds of Celtic’s record breaking run were sown at Chelsea.

More than a decade ago Brendan Rodgers was on the coaching staff at Stamford Bridge where he worked with players such as Scott Sinclair and Ryan Bertland in the youth set up.

The young Irishman has always been keen to learn and soaked up everything he could as Chelsea were transformed from a nearly team to winners.

Jose Mourinho installed his winning mentality throughout the club with his early Chelsea side’s playing with flair and style.

Rodgers has applied those lessons at Reading, Watford, Swansea and Liverpool to varying degrees of success but it’s at Celtic that he has found the platform to really put his beliefs into action.

Explaining Celtic’s run in the Daily Mail Commons said: “I remember an early meeting I had with Brendan at Celtic when he told me the importance of his time at Chelsea watching top class professionals, who all demanded extra work.

He mentioned Andriy Shevchenko, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, John Terry — great players who all worked tirelessly on their game at all times. Even World Cup winners wanted to improve every single day and that attitude made a mark on Brendan.

Craig Gordon is proof that no matter how old you are you can always learn and improve. Craig would never have had to play out from the back before, but now he’s a ball-playing goalkeeper.

Also, you can see Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic, James Forrest, and Stuart Armstrong have all improved by buying into Brendan’s methods and learning from his tactical knowledge.

Can Celtic go a full domestic season unbeaten again? It’s still early days and there are always outside influences you can’t plan for — like red cards, injuries, decisions by referees but it’s possible.”

Celtic pick up on their domestic run away to Ross County on Saturday with the trip to Dingwall quickly followed by facing Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League and the Betfred Cup Final against Motherwell at Hampden.
