Sevco’s Friday night statement seems to have had the desired effect with the hysteria to appoint Derek McInnes coming to a halt.

For two weeks the Aberdeen boss was getting told from various sources that his career would only progress with a move to Ibrox.

If McInnes was in any doubt about the desperate state of Sevco’s finances then their reluctance to open talks or discuss compensation with the Dons will have provided proof.

For roughly the same cost of Alfredo Morelos, Dave King has refused to sanction and approach to Aberdeen.

A home match with Hamilton on Saturday, followed by a trip to Dundee, gives Graham Murty another fortnight in charge as the appointment of a new boss is slipped into the long glass.

Before he gets round to opening his advent calendar King should have a verdict from the Court of Session on his concert party takeover and the club AGM to negotiate.

The AGM should be easy to handle but if the CoS give their verdict beforehand there is a chance that some shareholders may be able to finally put two and two together.

In the meantime McInnes can get on with managing Aberdeen having dodged a bullet even more harmful than the one at Sunderland he sidestepped in the close season.
