Cristian Gamboa could be in line for a surprise place in Celtic’s Betfred Cup Final side against Motherwell.

The Costa Rican internationalist has only played two club matches this season but with Mikael Lustig injured after just 12 minutes of the defeat against Paris Saint Germain the door could be opened for Gamboa to return to the side.

Lustig looked upset at twisting his knee but managed to walk off the pitch with physio Tim Wilkinson.

Anthony Ralston deputised for Lustig earlier in the season but hasn’t played since making a brief substitute appearance in the Betfred Cup win over Dundee in September and recently underwent surgery on his knee.

Despite falling out of favour at Celtic Gamboa has retained his place in the Costa Rica side that has reached the World Cup Finals in Russia.

Last season the 28-year-old started 16 matches for Celtic following his August transfer from West Brom.
