Tony Fitzpatrick has compared Lewis Morgan with the best players that he has ever seen in his 40 plus years associated with St Mirren.

The midfielder broke into the Saints side in the mid-seventies alongside Billy Stark and Frank McGarvey before he earned a move to Bristol City.

Personal circumstances forced him to return from England where he played in the 1987 Scottish Cup win alongside Paul Lambert before going on to have successful stints as manager and now as chief executive.

Celtic have agreed to loan Morgan back to St Mirren for the rest of the season with just the small print to be agreed of a £300,000 deal.

Speaking to the Evening Times Fitzpatrick said: “There have been some great players, like Frank McAvennie, Frank McGarvey, Peter Weir. Even up to the modern day with John McGinn and Kenny McLean.

Lewis is up there with any of them. He has that thing that makes people want to come and see football matches. When he receives the ball, you see people coming up off the edge of their seat.”

Morgan has made close to 100 appearances for St Mirren since leaving Sevco as a 16-year-old but one match in particular has earned him a chance at the big time.

Fitzpatrick added: “When we played against Celtic last season, I think Brendan Rodgers was wowed when he saw this kid running at people and his intensity in the game in shutting people down. If Celtic do sign him, they’ve got a top young player.”

St Mirren are currently two points clear of Dundee United at the top of the table with the top two meeting next Friday in a match that will be shown live on BT Sport.
