Gordon Strachan has slammed the critics who claimed that he should have selected Sevco stars for Scotland while they were playing in the lower divisions.

At various times campaigns were launched to select Lee Wallace, Barrie McKay and Lewis Macleod for Scotland which Strachan managed to steer clear of.

During their four year stint in the lower divisions only MacLeod attracted the offer of a transfer with Brentford picking up the midfielder for £400,000.

Strachan stuck to players at the top level in Scotland and England and pulled no punches as he explained in an interview with the Daily Record.

I did go to Ibrox occasionally but you’ve got to remember for three or four years they weren’t in the top division,” the former Scotland boss explained. “Was I supposed to go and watch them against Brechin?

“People had a go at me for not picking Lee Wallace and Barrie MacKay but they were playing against Forfar and Brechin. Do us a favour. They are not even as good as Eastleigh or Sutton for Christ’s sake.

But as soon as they got into the Premiership what did I do? I put them in the squad because they were doing well against the likes of Hearts.”

In a number of interviews this week Strachan has expressed his disappointment at losing the Scotland job and the way that it was handled by Stewart Regan.

The SFA have still to appoint a replacement with the favourite, Michael O’Neill claiming that he has had no contact with the SFA about the vacancy.
