Why SPFL ‘telly’ would work

Scottish football and it’s relationship with television is one of the biggest issues in the game.

While Celtic strive to compete in Europe which takes their turnover to around £90m a few hundred miles down the road Burnley, Bournemouth and Huddersfield can expect to pick up £100m from UK telly deals with more to follow from worldwide rights with the comfort of parachute payments for relegation.

The SPL has consistently undersold the Scottish game with that trait going back to the brief appearances and demise of SPL TV which became a tag to ridicule the decision makers in the Scottish game.

Fifteen years ago broadband was for sci-fi buffs, smart phones hadn’t been thought of with 3G and 4G as far fetched as the idea of streaming on a tablet.

In 2018 SPFL TV is well worthy of consideration with The Football Life producing an impressive report showing that the concept is viable.

Using the BARB figures that broadcasters hang on to they have come up with a plan that at the very least deserves consideration and debate rather than looking exclusively to BT Sport and Sky to see what crumbs they have after funding the English game.

Using their figures it shouldn’t be too difficult to anticipate 600,000 subscriptions at £10/month for comprehensive coverage of Scottish football.

Start up costs would be a problem but a creative marketing team could surely come up with sponsors willing to invest.

On those figures £6m a month could be raised, over the ten months of the season that would bring in double what a new improved deal is likely to raise.

With the potential for overseas subscriptions and advertising revenues there could be more and the chance for growth and development.

Only fools wouldn’t give it proper consideration.
