A campaign to get Walter Smith in charge of Scotland is underway.

The former Rangers (IL) boss hasn’t been involved in management since 2011 but this morning Jim Duffy in The Sun and Keith Jackson in the Record are both highlighting the suitability of the man who will be 70 later this month.

Who exactly wants Smith is unclear following the resignation of Stewart Regan.

The International Board of the SFA appear to be split in two with Rod Petrie and Alan McRae licking their wounds after being outmanoeuvered over Regan.

Smith was in charge of Scotland from December 2004 to January 2007 when he returned to Ibrox to mastermind Dave Murray’s EBT programme.

With the ability to entice players by offering salaries supported by ‘tax free’ EBT payments Smith was able to keep the Ibrox club afloat thanks to reaching the group phase of the Champions League.

After walking away from Rangers (IL) in 2011 Smith wished the new club every success in 2012 before taking on a non-executive directorship then becoming chairman before walking away.

In 36 Champions League group matches Smith managed to win six.
