Three weeks after joining up with Brendan Rodgers at Lennoxtown, Garry Monk is back in football as manager of Birmingham City.

Monk joined his old Swansea boss as Celtic prepared to face Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League before taking a coaching trip to India.

Birmingham’s 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday proved to be the end of the line for Steve Cotterill with the club third bottom in the Championship, two points adrift of safety but also just two above bottom placed Sunderland.

Monk was in charge of Leeds last season before switching to Middlesbrough who sacked him just before Christmas.

Harry Redknapp, Gianfranco Zola, Lee Clark and Chris Hughton have all had stints in charge of Birmingham since Alex McLeish quit in 2011.

Tomorrow night Monk will be on familiar ground when he takes charge of Birmingham against Middlesbrough looking to end a run of five successive defeats.
