Neil Doncaster has joined the Board of the SFA as the chess pieces are shuffled around awaiting the report of the Compliance Officer into why Rangers (IL) were awarded a UEFA licence in 2011.

The issue has been in Tony McGlennan’s pending box since the start of September with a number of the main characters involved quitting before publication.

Doncaster, as chief executive of the SPFL, called for a full review of governance matters over the last decade but had that request rejected with Stewart Regan deciding that only the 2011 licence issue was worth reviewing.

Ian Maxwell, of Partick Thistle, has stood down from the Board of the SFA to apply for the job of Chief Executive with the appointment of Doncaster keeping Allan McRae and Rod Petrie isolated.

Announcing today’s change President McRae told the SFA website: “I would like to thank Ian Maxwell for his valuable contributions to the work of our Board, in particular, the part played by him during the recruitment of our national team manager.

I am pleased to welcome Neil Doncaster onto our Board to replace Ian. Neil’s experience in the game should be of great benefit to the Scottish FA and I look forward to working with him and the other directors to drive the game in this country forward.”

Neil Doncaster, said: “I am very grateful for the support of the Scottish FA Board and look forward to Scotland’s two main footballing bodies working together more closely than ever before for the good of the entire game.”

While McRae credits Maxwell with a role in the appointment of Alex McLeish it’s believed that McRae and Petrie were the driving force behind the decision to appoint a manager who received £1.7m in EBT payments while managing Rangers (IL).
