Chris Sutton believes that Dermot Desmond has got it all wrong by ‘welcoming’ Arsenal’s possible interest in Brendan Rodgers.

Almost as soon as Arsene Wenger had announced that he was stepping down after 22 years Celtic’s biggest shareholder was giving an interview to Sky Sports.

It seemed unusually media friendly from the Irishman businessman with Celtic fans concerned by the reaction.

In over 20 years involvement with Celtic Desmond hasn’t made many wrong calls and was the man responsible for appointing Martin O’Neill and Brendan Rodgers as manager.

Desmond would have his response and strategy carefully thought out and appears to be in weekly contact with the Celtic manager.

Finding a manager that fits Celtic as well as Rodgers does is a near impossible task with Sutton concerned by the signal it sends.

Writing in the Daily Record he asks: “Dermot says he won’t stand in Brendan’s way – but he should be standing in his way. Where’s the ambition?

It is always going to be difficult if a club like Arsenal come calling but Celtic have to put up some kind of fight to keep him.

You don’t just simply step aside and wish him the best of luck. Celtic are a big club in their own right but Dermot coming out with this kind of stuff just makes them look small fry.”

The day before Wenger’s statement Rodgers repeated how happy he is with Celtic.

Being linked with the Arsenal vacancy is flattering to both Rodgers and Celtic who both have lots of goals to achieve in the remaining three years of the Irishman’s contract.
