Alex McLeish will hold further talks with Brendan Rodgers about taking Celtic players to Peru and Mexico in the middle of the close season.

Stewart Regan’s legacy tour defies common sense but is something that the new Scotland manager is determined to go ahead with.

Scotland face Peru on May 29 then Mexico on June 2 with Celtic resuming pre-season training in mid-June ahead of the first Champions League qualifier on July 11/12.

Celtic’s Champions League qualification has earned the club the best part of £30m in each of the last two seasons while other top flight clubs have picked up payments of £360,000.

It is believed that Scotland will be paid £250,000 for the two match trip to South and Central America.

Updating the situation McLeish told the Evening Times: “I am still to have that second conversation with Brendan who was very honest about everything. I need to pick a squad and he knows that. That will reflect on the squad I pick.

I am prepared to make a concession here or there. There is the term burnout which has happened in the past and I understand all that.

“I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot either and I don’t have somebody available for us later in the campaign. I will have those closed talks again before I name my squad.”

Craig Gordon, Jack Hendry, Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Stuart Armstrong, Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie and Leigh Griffiths have all been capped by Scotland this season.

During his time as manager of Rangers (IL) McLeish received £1.7m of EBT payments which weren’t declared to the SFA or SPL.
