Sevco are close to agreeing a deal to appoint Steven Gerrard as their new manager.

According to a report in The Sun, Mark Allen has headed up the Ibrox delegation which will see the 38-year-old take on the multitude of problems waiting in Glasgow.

With Dave King continuing to ignore a Court of Session order Sevco’s finances are in a dangerous place with the possibility of Close Brothers being forced to recall their £3m emergency loan.

While the South African based criminal remains at Ibrox there won’t be any share issue which has been promised for three years to resolve the company’s problems which sees debt of £20.7m on a turnover of £29.2m.

However The Sun reports: “It’s understood the former England international isn’t daunted by the size of the task or the challenge of restoring the club to its former glory.

Talks between all parties are said to be ongoing, but SunSport understands a deal is close with director of football Mark Allen leading the Ibrox delegation.”

Gerrard ended an 18 year playing association with Liverpool in 2015 then spent two seasons with LA Galaxy where he made 34 appearances.

After turning down the chance to manage MK Dons in January 2017 he took up a coaching job at Liverpool’s youth academy.

The appointment of Gerrard would certainly shift season tickets, Sevco’s main function and source of income, but also raise expectations on a managerial rookie up against Brendan Rodgers, Neil Lennon, Derek McInnes and Stevie Clarke next seaason.
