Alex Rae has claimed that Sevco are lacking in leadership from the top down.

Six weeks ago it seemed that all was well in the world as Sevco launched a title challenge based on four astute January loan deals. For good measure the gullibles were also told that an £11m bid for Alfredo Morelos had been turned down.

Two painful defeats from Celtic have changed the environment with Dave King coming in for criticism as much as Graeme Murty.

The cold reality from Hampden is now sinking in among the Ibrox support with the prospects of stopping Celtic winning an eighth title only slightly less remote than stopping number seven.

Rae has followed the downfall closely in his various roles with Radio Scotland, BT Sport, Radio Clyde, TalkSPORT and Sky Sports with the current situation requiring scapegoats.

Speaking to BBC Scotland about the actions of Lee Wallace and Kenny Miller the former St Mirren boss said: “You get that kind of thing when things are not going too well.

“You don’t hear much coming out of the Celtic dressing room. It gives an indication of where Rangers are at the moment. They lack leadership from the top down.”

He added: “If you had someone in there like Graeme Souness, Walter Smith or Alex McLeish, I’m not sure you’d have had the reaction of the players, particularly on the bench.

“There’s always been words within the dressing room but I’m not sure one of those guys would have suspended people on the back of words being shared.

“I’ve been in dressing rooms when people have been in other people’s faces, when fights have broken out.

“When I was a younger player, no one had the bottle to speak up against the gaffer. I think, more recently, managers have been more open minded and there’s more of a talking culture.

“Part of the problem is with the manager coming out after the game and basically saying ‘we’ll deal with it in a couple of days’, a lot of players may have felt that it needed to be dealt with there and then.”

During his two year playing stint with Rangers (IL) Rae had £569,000 paid into an EBT which the Supreme Court ruled was disguised remuneration.
