Sutton’s warning that the gap is growing

After accusing Sevco of playing like a pub team Chris Sutton believes that the Ibrox side are further away from Celtic than they were while playing in a different division!

The tribute act spent two seasons in The Championship during which supporters were able to harbour thoughts about how they would fare in the top flight.

After two seasons playing against full-time opponents the journey has turned sour- very sour.

With three matches left to play Sevco look like finishing the season in fourth place hoping for Celtic to win the Scottish Cup to create a place in the Europa League, licence permitting.

None of the current Sevco side would get near the bench at Celtic with Sutton spelling out the issues in brutal fashion.

He told Daily Record readers: “I don’t even think you could accuse Rangers of not trying. It’s just they are not any good. Don’t be fooled by the gap in terms of points. The real gap is absolutely massive – and it’s getting wider.

Rangers are not any better than when they were in the Championship and you could argue they are far worse.

The only positive for them is a lot of these players are only on loan and can be sent back but for Gerrard that derby display must have been a real eye-opener. He must now be thinking, “How on earth can this be turned around to even get close to Celtic?”

Ibrox is not a place where you can rebuild slowly.”

There has been no comment out of Ibrox in the 23 hours since the final whistle blew on their 5-0 defeat at Celtic Park.

The prospects of Steven Gerrard taking over have lengthened with his close pal Danny Murphy claiming that he was looking for concrete reassurances that he would be given the transfer funds to compete with Brendan Rodgers!
