Dedryck Boyata is in talks over a new Celtic contract.

The defender is about to enter the final year of his hoops deal after signing from Manchester City in 2015.

Brendan Rodgers has gone on record saying that Boyata is his first choice central defender after recalling him midway through last season after it appeared that his Celtic days were over.

Last summer talks about a new contract for Stuart Armstrong dragged on into the new season with neither party especially happy over a 12 month extension that has the club and player now back in the same situation.

At 27-years-old his next contract is crucial with the Belgian internationalist saying all the right things as he looked beyond Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final

I am in talks with the club and I have said it before that I am happy here,” Boyata told the Daily Record.

Right now, nothing is done and it’s not like I can actually say what is going to be done but I am in talks and we are trying to find some sort of arrangement.

I have been talking a lot with the manager and trying to find a solution.

I don’t want to say yes and then nothing happens later but everything is just so positive. I am having a great time.”

Whether Boyata signs up or not it’s expected that strengthening central defence will be a priority area for Rodgers in the summer.
