Barry Ferguson is convinced that Steven Gerrard will be given the cash to stop Celtic making it eight-in-a-row next season.

The appointment of the Liverpool u-18 coach has been enough to distract Sevco fans away from another failed title bid and a 9-0 aggregate from their two most recent ‘Old Firm battles’.

Last weekend there was a frenzy of anticipation about money pouring into Ibrox only for King to admit to his favoured reporters that no fresh money was coming in.

Like many Ibrox fans Ferguson refuses to accept the reality of football financing in 2018 and is convinced that King has more than £6m from a mysterious share issue to fund next season’s revolution.

In the Daily Record the former Rangers (IL) captain explained: “Don’t get me wrong, that money will be useful, especially when you chuck in the cash from season ticket sales, the new merchandise deal and maybe the odd sale or two of players but realistically it’s not going to generate the funds needed to go toe to toe with Celtic.

That said, I do believe there will be more money on the way. There’s no chance Steven Gerrard has not been given certain assurances he will get proper backing in the transfer market.

There will be something in the pipeline they are working on because the type of guy Gerrard seems to be, he wouldn’t have accepted the job if he didn’t fancy a proper crack at it. We’re only at the second week in May so there is still time.

King threw a few grenades in last week and it makes interesting headlines. But it’s actions that are required at Rangers rather than words.”

Unsurprisingly Ferguson added: “I’ve got to say I was hugely impressed by Gerrard at his unveiling. There was a stature and aura around him and he was note perfect with everything he said.

This is a guy who has worked under severe pressure and huge demands all of his career and when he was asked about coping with massive scrutiny at Rangers he said, ‘Bring it on’.

That’ll do for me, he’s got a big job on his hands but he sounds like he’s up for it.”

Since appearing at his media conference Gerrard hasn’t made any comment about his new job, since King announced his £6m share issue there has been no documentation published or statement from Ibrox.
