Anton Rogan is honoured that Brendan Rodgers named his son after the former Celtic defender.

Back in 1986 Davie Hay signed a promising young defender from Distillery allowing Rogan to live the dream of thousands from the north east corner of the island.

Celtic’s supply of Irish players had dried up during the seventies with Packie Bonner flying the flag through the eighties.

Watching from Carnlough was the Rodgers family with young Brendan, an aspiring player, a regular on the trips to Celtic Park.

Rogan had an outstanding season in 1988 as Celtic lifted the double, five years later following the birth of his son there was only one name for the future Celtic boss to choose when it came to finding a name.

Someone told me about it ages ago,” Rogan told The Sun about naming rights. “When he was at Liverpool I heard that.

To be honest, I didn’t take any notice and I still don’t take any notice. I’m honoured that he did it but for me I’m not one of these people that would gloat about something like that.

For me, it’s just ‘Oh well, fair play to you’ and that’s it – happy days.’”

Rogan now lives in Oxford where he owns a taxi firm.
